Jerome Increase Case founded the J I Case Company in 1842. He is recognized for having built a Case tractor steam engine for agricultural use, the first builder of such an engine. As president of the company he manufactured more Case tractor threshing machines and steam engines than any other company in history. He lived from 1819 to 1891.
A great example of his commitment to excellence is the story of a farmer who had been refused service on his brand new Case tractor thresher by the company. Hearing of this Case himself went out to do the repairs. When he failed to be able to make the repairs and was disgusted that a Case tractor of this caliber was even allowed to leave his factory doused it with kerosene and set it ablaze. The very next day he sent a brand new Case tractor thresher to the man.
In the 1980's Case acquired International Harvester, once a fierce competitor, making it the second largest farm tractor manufacturer.
