Construction CranesConstruction cranes help make the buildings we live, work and shop in. Like practically all cranes, construction cranes are simply towers that use cables and pulleys to transport materials. Of course, some companies also use construction cranes to help them make heavy equipment. Construction cranes are often temporary structures that are either fixed to the ground or mounted on a construction vehicle. Basic construction cranes consist of a steel boom mounted on a platform. The boom is hinged at the bottom and can be raised and lowered. A hook is suspended from the top of the boom by cables and pulleys. Electric motors power these cables. Construction cranes like this can easily become demolition cranes if you add a demolition ball, or earthmovers if you add a bucket. There are a few types of construction cranes, and here is basic information about them. Telescopic construction cranes have a boom that consists of several square tubes fitted inside each other. A hydraulic mechanism can extend these tubes in order to increase the working height of the crane. Tower construction cranes are fixed to the ground and offer the best combination of height and lifting capacity. These construction cranes are often used to make tall buildings. A horizontal boom is balanced asymmetrically across the top of tower cranes, which can jack themselves up taller as buildings are constructed. The short arm carries a concrete counterweight, while the long arm carries the lifting apparatus. Operators of construction cranes can sit in a cabin at the top of the tower. Self-assembling tower cranes can jack themselves off of the ground, allowing the next tower section to be inserted at ground level. Thank you for visiting our website and learning about cranes. We hope that you will take a minute to look up information on other types of construction equipment. Work-Book.com: Construction Cranes
