The Mustang skid steer turns 40 this year. To celebrate the Mustang Manufacturing Company, Inc.gave away a model 2054 Mustang skid steer in 2005. They began collecting entries at the Las Vegas World of Concrete trade show in January. Mustang continued to collect entries throughout the year at U.S. tradeshow events and at dealer locations in the U.S. and Canada until the drawing which was scheduled to be held October 14, 2005.

Although the Mustang skid steer has only been around since 1965 the Mustang roots date back to 1865. The first Mustang skid steer was known as a ‘self-propelled four-wheel drive unit' and was recognized by its distinctive lime green and red color scheme. The first Mustang skid steers were actually called Owatonna Mustang Series, which were named after the company's hometown and original name, Owatonna Manufacturing Company.

The Mustang skid steer was designed to do the work of much larger machines and was created generations ahead of its time. During the 1960's the Mustang skid steer was one of the most powerful compact machines available on the market. It was powered by a 30-hp Wisconsin air-cooled engine, which made it an innovative design that was looked upon as an industry ‘first'. Included in some of these Mustang skid steer firsts were a hydrostatic drive and a neutral centering device.

Since 1965 Mustang skid steers have been available in 40 different models throughout the world. Mustang is well known for their skid steers but they also offer one of the broadest lines of compact construction equipment available from a single manufacturer. In addition to nine Mustang skid steer models they offer ten compact excavators, including zero and short-tail models, three track loaders and six telehandlers.
